October 9-13

This week on Monday it was normal accept it was Owen's birthday! We had army tank rice krispy treats. Tuesday we did basically the same thing. We worked on our Haunted House and Hot Shot writing. At the end of the day we worked on our Native American Tribes. Wednesday we finished our iMovies and the same thing for the rest of the day. Thursday we watched our iMovies and then watched the real Tuck Everlasting movie. After recess, we had workshop. Then, we finished our narrative writing and went to lunch.

This week we saw the eclipse. We prepared for the eclipse by getting paper and paper with a hole to project the sun's light. Also we made view finders out of shoe boxes. We also looked at the sun with glasses. It was really cool!

I am definitely feeling summer slipping away now and the anxious excitement of the new school year looming. Mrs. Rosen (your Science teacher and my BFF) and I have been talking a lot this summer about how to incorporate more leadership into our student's lives and have come up with some fun new things both of us will be trying out. The leadership ideas stem from Stephen Covey's book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and The Leader In Me. This idea of maintaining these 7 habits will empower our students to make positive, responsible choices. It is my hope to foster independence, yet also interdependence; fun, but also hard work; and always striving to learn more every day. I will be incorporating the 7 habits into my classroom in many ways, but listed are a few examples:

Leadership Roles: Jobs in the classroom in which the students will have the opportunity to take some responsibility for our classroom and its needs. (Book Gurus, Technology Supervisors, Banking Managers, Courier Chiefs, Right-Hand Helpers, Custodial Commanders). In addition we will also have a rotating job of Class Greeters and Busy Bloggers. The Class Greeters will stand at the door with me in the morning and shake hands with each classmate in the morning, as well as greet any guests we may have throughout the day. Our Busy Bloggers will work together to write a paragraph about something we did in class that week and post it to our blog.....so stay tuned :)

Leadership Notebook: Students will set goals for themselves and have the opportunity to track to see progress as well as make adjustments to areas that have room for further improvement.

Leader of the Week: Teacher and students will select a student who has shown growth in the habit we are currently focusing on that week.

Leadership Days: We will be inviting families and community members into the classroom to learn about what we have been up. This could take the form of sharing student Leadership Notebooks, presentations the students have made, reading aloud, etc.

Stephen Covey's 7 Habits
1. Be Proactive - You are in charge of you
2. Begin with the end in mind- Know what you want before you do it
3. Put first things first- Do the important things first
4. Think win-win- Find ways where everyone can win
5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood- Listen first, then talk
6. Synergize- Work together to do better
7. Sharpen the Saw- Take care of yourself

Happy Summer! It's going by pretty fast! Only about a month more until I get to meet all my new students and embark on another adventure as a fifth grade teacher. I love teaching, it is definitely my passion, but I LOVE this time of year. I get to spend some great time with my husband and two children , get to go a few places, and get to THINK about next school year. It's during the summer that my brain gets flooded with new ideas and excitement about the coming school year. What can I do differently? What cool things can I add to my day with my students? Well, I've been thinking a lot, and have many new things coming your way future class. :) I can't wait to meet all of you.
